Diesel Forklifts Versus Electric Forklifts
Forklifts can function one of two ways, either by internal combustion (IC) motor or by electric motor. Electric forklifts are best for indoor use and cost less to use. IC machinery are best for use outdoors and are faster to refuel.
Electric Forklifts
Electric lifts produce no exhaust, that makes them the machine of choice for indoor use where the quality of air is a concern. Electric forklifts are quiet and clean. They are 20% to 40% more expensive to purchase than IC lifts, but the per-hour operating cost of electric models is a lot lower. The downside is that batteries need 16 hours to charge and cool down, so purchasing an extra set of batteries is suggested. Electric lifts are not limited to indoor application, but when utilized outdoors they should be utilized carefully.
Diesel Forklifts
Internal Combustion forklifts have a higher carrying capacity than electric forklifts and are usually utilized for outdoor applications. If your fleet normally runs on one type of fuel, it may be a good idea to buy an IC unit which utilizes the same fuel. They can run on gas, propane or diesel. Diesel is the most economical. IC forklifts have the advantage of being less expensive to operate and easy to refuel; however, their operating cost on a per hour basis is higher. The majority of IC models cannot be utilized indoors.
Other Types of Forklifts
In warehouses where there are limited spaces, the narrow aisle electric forklift is most suitable. They are designed to pick up loads without having to face the lift towards the stacks. Rough terrain diesel forklifts have huge tires for running on difficult surfaces.
